Knights prepared to joust in one corner, Vikings showed their wares in another. Musicians in kilts played Celtic music, comical pirates entertained and fair maidens looked fetching.

One may have thought they were in the 16th century on the grounds of Western Reserve Masonic Community Oct. 10-11. That’s where the fourth annual Renaissance Family Faire drew around 3,000 people for a weekend of historical fun.

The event offered a fresh take while offering some of the familiar highlights that have made it a Medina fall tradition.

“Our main emphasis is giving something back to the community, for families to be able to have a good time together for small cost,” said Jay Dettorre, Western Reserve Masonic Community president. “Our staff and residents love sharing their campus with others.”

Whereas some Renaissance Fairs can charge upwards of $20 for admission, the Western Reserve event doesn’t charge admission.

Among the additions, a large tent exclusively for kids to enjoy shows, make their own shields or crowns or other items was added. An enchanted forest, where kids could toss bean bags for prizes was another new treat.

The Viking encampment was the hot spot for photos as visitors could try on helmets and handle gear while mingling with Viking reenactors.

For arts lovers, there was authentic Celtic music, comedy skits featuring pirates, and recorder and readers theater performances by Western Reserve residents.

Favorite returning highlights included fire breathing from Ander the Indestructible, who added walking on broken glass to his feats this year, and jousting by knights on horseback.

Several games, shopping, even fortune telling, were part of the fun. All that can make one famished. You could recover with the faire’s signature food, smoked turkey leg and a pint of “grog.” Or you could have good old hot dogs and French fries, just as a reminder you were still in the 21st century.

The Renaissance Family Faire will return to Western Reserve Masonic Community in fall 2010. For more information about the community, which offers independent living, assisted living and skilled nursing options for ages 55-older, call (330) 721-3261.
